About the Department

The Department of Physics, established in the year 2019, offers a two-year Postgraduate Programme, M.Sc. Physics, with a sanctioned strength of 50 students. The department has a strong experimental focus on thin films fabrication, solar water distillation, nanomaterial synthesis, and characterization for various applications.

Vision

To create and augment a strong fundamental base for excellence and growth by triggering and promoting passion, interests and enthusiasm in the study of Physics.

Mission

To innovatively stimulate young minds to find their talents theoretically and experimentally through committed teaching methods.
To make vital contributions towards developing modern labs and demonstrate a high level of competence in the study of Physics.
To produce quality graduates for the research by imparting advanced concepts and techniques.
To make our graduates employable and preferable by industry through exponential research and innovative practices.

Programme Description

amme Description Postgraduate study in Physics prepares students for leadership roles in research, development, and the ambition to pursue high-level teaching methodologies, and advanced areas of experimental and theoretical physics that require skillful and imaginative solutions. During the coursework, learners are exposed to the recent trends in physics such as nanomaterials, Electromagnetic Theory, Thin Films, Crystal Growth Techniques, Ultrasonic Compressibility, Photovoltaic Cell Characteristics, LASER, Fiber Optics, Analog & Digital Electronics, Microprocessors, Microcontrollers, Semiconductor Manufacturing, Robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

The M.Sc. Physics programme offers both national and international career opportunities. Upon completion of the course, students can secure high-profile positions in areas such as IT consultant, Test Engineer, Field Engineer, Optical Engineer, Nanotechnologist, Geophysicist, Meteorologist, and Research Assistant / Associate across world-leading research institutions, etc.

Best Practices of the Department

  • ➤ ITraining the students towards CSIR-NET and GATE.
  • ➤ Creating opportunities to undergo training in esteemed research institutions like IITs, IISERs, NITs, IIA and TIFR etc.
  • ➤ Encouraging and providing entrance exam guidance to students for joining stipendiary Ph.D. programmes.
  • ➤ Creating technical and industry readiness among the students to acquire positions in multinational companies such as ZOHO, Accenture, TCS, CTS and Wipro etc.
  • ➤ Providing mentoring support to learn online courses in NPTEL, Coursera, IIT Bombay Spoken Tutorial and other online learning platforms.
  • ➤ Arranging application-oriented industrial visits to the Solar Observatory Centre, Kodaikanal, Radio Astronomy Centre, Ooty, and Regional Science Centre, Coimbatore, etc.
  • ➤ Guiding students to tap into the project funds from the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST) for Final Year Project Works.

Goals & Objectives

Goals :

To develop a strong foundational understanding of the core domains of physics, such as Quantum Mechanics, Classical Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electricity, Magnetism, Optics, and Special Relativity. The emphasis is on conceptual clarity rather than memorization of specific facts, allowing these principles to be flexibly applied to explain and predict physical phenomena. Learners gain the ability to critically analyze both familiar and unfamiliar physical problems using qualitative insight and quantitative reasoning. This includes recognizing the relevant physical laws, equations, and fundamental constants required to model, interpret, and solve fundamental physics problems.

Objectives :

✓ Apply fundamental and advanced knowledge of physics to design and develop scientific solutions, with a focus on research in physics and materials characterization.

✓ Demonstrate professional competence in materials characterization and laser technology while upholding high ethical standards, effective communication, critical thinking, and lifelong learning skills.

✓ Acquire a strong academic foundation and leadership qualities to address challenges in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research and professional environments.

✓ Adapt to, assimilate, and develop innovative and emerging technologies in physical sciences and related fields through continuous learning.

✓ Practice ethical values and contribute responsibly in multidisciplinary settings, advancing physics through scientific competence, innovation, and critical analysis.
