INDUSTRY RECOGNITION

Our B.Sc., Microbiology course is recognised by DBT Star college scheme.

About the Department

The Department of Microbiology was established in 2004 and is actively engaged in teaching, research, and skill development. Research activities in the department focus on microbial physiology, environmental microbiology, virology, medical microbiology, bioactive phytochemicals, and biofuels. The department is well-equipped with both basic and advanced research facilities to support academic and research activities. It has successfully completed a major research project funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The department also received support from the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology under the Popularization of Science Activities scheme. It is one of the four departments in the college recognized under the DBT Star College Scheme. The department has established tie-ups with diagnostic laboratories for student placements, offers a Diploma programme in Clinical Laboratory Techniques, maintains linkages with research laboratories for career enhancement, and provides certifications in FoSTaC–FSSAI.

Vision

To become a center of academic excellence with highly qualified, knowledgeable, competent Microbiologists in order to empower the students and make them responsible citizens.

Mission

To incorporate outcome based curriculum by practicing innovative teaching methodologies both in theory and practical subjects.
To build self-confidence, values and optimistic thinking in the minds of students.

Programme Description

The B.Sc. Microbiology programme involves a comprehensive study of microorganisms through specialized core papers such as Microbial physiology, Bioinstrumentation, Immunology, Virology and Medical Microbiology. The programme emphasizes the importance of microbiological research in addressing emerging global health challenges and disease management. Practical training forms a major component of the curriculum, enabling students to acquire hands-on experience in laboratory techniques and research methodologies. As part of the curriculum, final-year students undertake a mini project focused on addressing a specific scientific problem, thereby enhancing their research skills, analytical thinking, and preparedness for future scientific challenges.

Best Practices of the Department

  • Earn while Learn - Students receive hands-on training in mushroom cultivation, gaining practical skills in production and management. The programme enables students to earn income while learning, fostering entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
  • Publications - Encouragement and mentoring of students to publish research papers in reputed journals and present their work at national and international conferences, through Global Immersion Programme and BIOSUMMIT, the annual flagship event.
  • Instruments - Students were sensitized to professional standards through training in the industriousness and ethical use of advanced laboratory instruments such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) systems, phase contrast microscopes, fluorescent microscopes laminar airflow units, autoclaves, and other essential microbiological and molecular biology equipments.

Goals & Objectives

✓ To emerge as a centre of academic excellence by nurturing highly qualified, knowledgeable, and competent microbiologists who are responsible citizens and capable of contributing to societal progress as entrepreneurs, scientists, or professionals in diverse industries. .

✓ To implement an outcome-based curriculum that addresses student needs through innovative teaching–learning methodologies in both theory and practical subjects, enabling the identification and development of creative potential, strengths, teamwork, and overall professional competence.

HICAS

The academic experience with a finest infrastructure facilities and excellent faculty has enhanced my career with strong subject background and lifelong excellence. The exceptional programmes backed by skilful teaching and practical classes along with industry interface has been the confidence boosters to pursue a career in research. The support and motivation of the enthusiastic faculty members of Microbiology and Biotechnology Department, was a learning-oriented journey. The practical approach and dissertation knowledge that I gained by taking over 6 months of active research work during the M. Sc., programme has provided me with real time and hands on skills required for a career in research. The friendly attitude of the Professors and their willingness to always offer a helping hand has made me feel a part of the HICAS family. The tenure spent here was splendid and has helped my growth in both professional and personal life. I am really grateful and proud to be a part of this institution as alumni, for the experiences that have graced my life.
